Cada año, en todo el mundo, miles de personas descubren el flamenco por primera vez, ya sea viendo una actuación en directo o, cada vez más, viendo vídeos online o escuchando música flamenca en streaming. Tal vez seas tu una persona a la que te ha cautivado la música flamenca, con la cualidad casi mística de sus armonías y melodías, y sus extraños ritmos, tan desconocidos y a la vez intrigantes para los que nos hemos criado en otros estilos de música. O tal vez te hayas quedado asombrado y conmovido por la pasión e intensidad de un espectáculo de baile flamenco y te hayas preguntado si es posible aprender algo de sus secretos y sus técnicas.

La gran noticia es que ahora hay escuelas y academias de baile en todo el mundo que ofrecen clases de baile y música flamenca, así que es muy probable que la oportunidad de aprender en persona esté más cerca de lo que piensas.

Estamos tratando de encontrar el mayor número posible de estas escuelas para añadirlas a nuestro directorio web y al mapa en línea. Sin embargo, somos conscientes de que este trabajo no está ni mucho menos terminado, por lo que pedimos disculpas si vuestra escuela no aparece todavía, ¡háznoslo saber!

Learning Flamenco Dance... Where to Start?

Every year, all around the world, thousands of people are discovering flamenco for the first time, either from seeing a live performance or, increasingly, from watching online videos or listening to streaming flamenco music online. Perhaps you are someone who has been captivated by hearing flamenco music, with the almost mystical quality of its harmonies and melodies, and its strange rhythms, so unfamiliar and yet intriguing to those of us raised on other styles of music. Or perhaps you have been amazed and moved by the passion and intensity of a flamenco dance performance and wondered whether it is actually possible to learn something of its secrets and techniques.  

The great news is that there are now dance schools and academies all around the world offering flamenco dance and music classes so there is a good chance that the opportunity to learn in-person classes may be closer than you think.

We are attempting to find as many of these schools as possible wherever they are in the world, to add them to our website directory and online map. We are aware however that this work is nowhere near complete, so our apologies if your school does not appear yet, please just let us know!

Para la mayoría de los estudiantes es la diversión de aprender en el ambiente vibrante de un estudio de baile, disfrutando del contacto personal con un profesor y la orientación y los conocimientos que pueden ofrecer, así como la compañía y el estímulo de los compañeros que contribuyen a hacer del aprendizaje del flamenco una experiencia tan agradable y gratificante.

Pero tanto si asistes a clases como si estudias y prácticas en casa, existe una amplia y creciente cantidad de recursos en línea que pueden complementar tu aprendizaje, ayudándote a mejorar tus técnicas de baile flamenco y tu comprensión de la música y la cultura flamencas...

• Leer artículos y ver documentales para comprender mejor las raíces y la historia de la música flamenca y cómo esa historia refleja las influencias de las numerosas culturas presentes en el sur de España a lo largo de los siglos.
• Aprender a través de tutoriales en vídeo realizados por profesores de España y de todo el mundo, en los que se muestran técnicas de baile flamenco como la postura, los movimientos de manos y brazos, los giros, las secuencias de pasos y las coreografías completas.
• Ver, escuchar y ser inspirado por los vídeos y la música en streaming de los grandes del flamenco del pasado y del presente.
• Conocer las diferentes formas y estilos del flamenco (conocidos como "palos"); sus ritmos, tonalidad y carácter, y ver actuaciones clásicas de cada uno de ellos.
• Incluso podrás ver las actuaciones de tus compañeros de escuelas de todo el mundo mientras bailan en sus espectáculos de fin de curso.

Dance Studio or Online?

For most students it is the fun of learning in the vibrant atmosphere of a dance studio, enjoying the personal contact with a teacher and the guidance and insights they can offer, as well as the company and encouragement of fellow students which contribute to make learning flamenco such an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

But whether you are attending classes or studying and practising at home, there are a growing number of online resources which can complement your learning, helping you to improve your flamenco dance techniques and your understanding of flamenco music and culture…

• Read articles and watch documentaries to gain a better understanding of the roots and history of flamenco music and how that history reflects the influences of the many cultures present in southern Spain across the centuries.
• Learn from video tutorials made by teachers from Spain and across the world as they demonstrate flamenco dance techniques such as posture, hand and arm movements, turns, sequencies of steps and complete choreographies.
• Watch, listen to and be inspired by videos and streaming music of the flamenco greats from past and present.
• Learn about the different forms and styles of flamenco (known as ‘palos’); their rhythms, tonality and character, and watch classic performances of each one.
• Even watch performances by your fellow students from schools across the world as they dance in their end of year shows!

Si bien es cierto que la mayoría de los recursos online para aprender flamenco están creados en español, cada vez aparecen más tutoriales y documentales en otros idiomas y muchos de ellos son fácilmente traducibles al español gracias a las increíbles herramientas de traducción disponibles en el Internet. Por ejemplo, YouTube ofrece subtítulos en casi cualquier idioma para la mayoría de los vídeos en los que el audio es suficientemente claro*. Busca este icono en la parte inferior derecha de la pantalla que indica que los subtítulos y la traducción están disponibles:

Subtitles and Online Translations

Don’t let language be a barrier to understanding flamenco-learning resources on the internet! In fact learning flamenco can also be a fantastic opportunity to improve your Spanish since the vast majority of online flamenco resources are created in Spanish and many of these are easily translatable into other languages using the incredible translation tools now available on the internet. For example, YouTube provides subtitles in almost any language for most videos where the audio is sufficiently clear*. Look for this icon at the bottom right side of the screen indicating that subtitles and translation are available:
